Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? And, then after that, I continued looking for doctors, maybe hoping Id hear what I wanted to hear. And we do have some turbulence between us. He has worked with some of the top names in rock, including Nils Lofgren, Eric Burdon, John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Ian Hunter, Lou Reed, Jefferson Starship, Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Whitesnake, Sammy Hagar, Michael Schenker, UFO, Flo & Eddie and Journey. After being on the road, I'd spend a couple of months studying with him once or twice a week. So it was the best of all worlds, I think, when I got into a band that had the ability to play in a progressive way but was open-minded about writing songs. AD: I've always liked Max Roach. They sort of got uptight with me because I was much younger than they were. It could be east of Vine. See, if you price yourself as an average session man," you get every Tom, Dick and Harry calling you up for sessions, and I'm not into doing just anybody's session. The less you play, the more they hear. Doing a record isnt like the rigors of touring, but its a demand on your time. Then we'd go out on the road again and when I'd get back, I would have to start over again because I wouldn't have the chance to practice on the road. Zappa let me do whatever I wanted to with it, so I played like a frustrated drummer. Then we had Aynsley Dunbar, he taught me a lot. Then when it came to the rest of the kit, I could get used to the sounds and the feel of the drums one at a time, and not be over powered by the immensity of the whole situation. You cant bust me for steroids, but youre gonna bust me for perjuryI get it! They just wanted some songs to get on the radio. But he didn't really extend my feelings-he just helped me understand something I wanted to be doing, which was reading music. And some funk. He's great at all of the percussion things. But he puts the drum track together one drum at a time, so it can sometimes be very abstract. It feels better. You were feeling like you were going to burn it out. And the songs I gotta tell you, it was unbelievable. Lets go fuckin be Journey again. I wouldnt have done that if I had any desire to leave the group. The only time in my life I ever did was that time I was forced into it when the rest of the band was at the bar drinking. He said he was having health issues, and he needed to have hip replacement, and this and that. "You believe that financial . Steve! Home alone and going Now what? Knowing it was over. So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. But once we started, Gene [Simmons], Paul and Bob Ezrin went, We think theres a good chemistry., Producer Ezrin called Coopers manager, Shep Gordon, and asked to cut a deal. I remember by the end of that tour [pause], feeling musically toasty, feeling emotionally toasty, feeling vocally toasty, and, um, [pause] telling the manager, I just dont want to stay out here and keep doing this. What happened was, I was in Los Angeles, trying to get signed, with a band that I was in at the timeit was called the Alien Project, but it was also called Street Talk. We were all sitting in a room and Frank said, "Whoever comes through that door next will play bass in the movie," and Martin [Lickert] walked in. **Do you think thats why the press didnt like you? Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. We were just playing dance music, but because I had been practicing for a few years, I was able to play along with all of the people who were my heroes. And George Tickner in the beginning, who was the guitar player in the band before he left, and in came myself and Jon Cain. According to Albritton, Hendrix was the most fun to cast, and Aynsley Dunbar, the Journey drummer and veteran of Mothers of Invention and the Bluesbreakers, was the most difficult. Because theyd had a certain amount of success without me, and they were wondering, once I joined, Is this the right direction? I could tell that. What are you talking about? And they would show me on the X-rays, and the MRIs. I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . I said, Im gonna get it done. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. Because then I started to become a medical guy. The more you play, the less they hear. You think they would have been happier if theyd made it in that prog-rock incarnation? Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. You had millions of fans and sold a ton of records. We have children together, which are the songs we wrote together, and we have a vested interest, as songwriters, in where they go and where they dont go. So, yeah. But some- times I can just close my eyes and let him ride out awhile. I was a Journeyman. They're really good. So the Beatles not only opened up new designs of music, but also faster distribution. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. I have tried to talk to him, numerous times. Because it was such an amazing use. I'd like to sit at home and work on that sort of stuff. But alot of times it's the head. I loved touring. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. I had no desire to. Its been painful. Completely. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. Because Journey had made a conscious decision, along with Columbiaswhats the correct word hererequest [laughs] that they become a little more song-oriented. Two summers ago I was asked by Sony to oversee the remastering of the entire catalog. *** Then I got a call from Bob Ezrin, the producer, and he asked me if I would do an album with Lou Reed. It was through the Beatles that they started moving records across the ocean faster . GQ: Journey had already made three records by the time you joined the band. And maybe its just my opinion. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. It sort of gives a rush in the feel, without actually rushing. And I had always been a big fan of Jan Hammer, the keyboard player that was playing with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and was doing all the Miami Vice themes at that time, the music for the show. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. He's been with me since about 1976, so he's really got it down. Like I said, using it can cause the problem. leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. But at the same time, the difference between a voice and fingers, or hands, is neurotic at best. If I did I might start breaking drums. Theres nobody who plays like Neal Schon, to this day. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. We wanna know when youre going into surgery, because we want to tour. And yknow I didnt feel like major surgery was a band decision. And so we were basically known as a touring band. Now, I'm using two 20" bass drums, 10", 12" and 14" power toms on top of the kit, 16" and 18" floor toms, and an 8 x 14 wood-shell snare drum, which is really a good,.sounding drum. My feeling at that point is very simple: What am I going back to now? You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it.
